The Big Dark

Dive into the "Big Dark" sea-son

It arrives late in the fall: a period of delayed sunrises, hastening sunsets and rain. So much rain.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, locals call this time the “Big Dark.” Some seek escape through warmth, brightness and community. Others embrace the chilly damp—in the proper outerwear of course.

Whatever your feelings on this distinctly PNW season, the Seattle Aquarium is here for you. Explore our offerings below—and then plan your visit to spark joyful connections with marine animals at home in the cold and the tropics.

Which ocean zone is your happy place?

Fall in Seattle brings diminishing sunlight—embraced by some, dreaded by others. Check in with your seasonal vibes while learning which ocean zone matches your need—or lack of it—for light.

Symbiotic relationships in the ocean

Dive into four symbiotic relationships featuring Aquarium animals that remind us of the importance of helping out our community during the Big Dark.

What do candles, cozy clothes and clownfish have in common?

They all start with the letter C, obviously! But there’s more: they can all have a role in reducing the effects of the winter blues. We sat down with health psychologist Kari Leibowitz, Ph.D. to talk about the effects of winter on people’s moods and sense of wellbeing.

Relax in The Reef

Step away from winter stress and into a place of warmth and light. Relax in front of our main window into The Reef, the largest habitat in the Ocean Pavilion. Connect with reef inhabitants, including a leopard whiptail ray, a bowmouth guitarfish, schooling fish and more.

Play Video about The Reef habitat at the Seattle Aquarium's Ocean Pavilion. The Seattle Aquarium logo and the words "Relax in The Reef" are in a blue banner across the top of the image.
