The centerpiece of Seattle’s revitalized waterfront, the Ocean Pavilion will demonstrate our region’s global conservation leadership to millions of people—from locals to visitors from all over the world.
This expansion of the Seattle Aquarium will also bring a variety of no-cost experiences to the estimated 15 million people who will visit our city’s waterfront each year. A viewing window will provide a look into the Ocean Pavilion’s largest habitat. Public spaces on and around the building will feature installations by local Indigenous artists. The public rooftop, featuring unparalleled views out to the Salish Sea, will help create a long-awaited, accessible connection between downtown’s Pike Place Market and the waterfront. And just outside the Ocean Pavilion’s front doors will be the city’s new, 20-acre Waterfront Park, ready for strolling and exploring.

Your gift of any size will help us complete the Ocean Pavilion, our new hub for conservation inspiration and action. Aquarium guests of all ages will be enthralled by a mesmerizing journey through the reef ecosystems of the Coral Triangle—a region of the Indo-Pacific that’s so rich in biodiversity that it’s been called “the Amazon of the ocean.” As a complement to the habitat experience, guests will explore the depths and wonder of the ocean virtually through state-of-the-art digital storytelling.
The result? A deepened understanding of how all waters are connected in Earth’s one ocean—and that our fate and the ocean’s are one and the same.
Up to 1.2 million guests will pass through the Ocean Pavilion’s doors each year. Your gift will help fulfill the awe-inspiring experiences they’ll enjoy—and fuel the conservation actions they’ll take on behalf of the one world ocean that connects us all.
The Ocean Pavilion building itself is a testament to our commitment to sustainability: It’s designed to operate 100% fossil-fuel free and recirculate 96% of the salt water in its habitats. This important expansion of the Aquarium campus will also provide vital space to grow our species recovery program.
We’re getting close to our goal of $80 million in private funding toward the campaign’s comprehensive $160 million goal.
Your support will help get us to the finish line on our private funding goal—bringing the Ocean Pavilion to life for today’s ocean advocates and those to come!
When the Ocean Pavilion opens on August 29, a slice of downtown Seattle will transform into a tropical reef ecosystem, bringing our community face-to-face with thousands of amazing plants and animals: Indo-Pacific leopard sharks, spotted eagle rays, schooling fish, colorful corals, mighty mangroves and so much more. Experiencing these wonders will help Aquarium guests understand more fully that all waters are connected—and that each of us can make a difference for ocean health.

For more than 10,000 years, Coast Salish peoples have stewarded the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest. They continue to do so today. We honor our location in this revered space, as well as our ongoing collaboration with Coast Salish peoples and the urban Indigenous community.
This collaboration has guided the Ocean Pavilion project since its early stages—and is reflected throughout the Aquarium campus. For instance, on the public plaza adjacent to the Ocean Pavilion, visitors can marvel at a compelling installation by glass artist Daniel Joseph Friday (Lummi) that was chosen by an all-Indigenous selection panel. On the building’s public roof, they’ll discover native plantings designed with guidance from traditional ecological knowledge-keeper Valerie Segrest (Muckleshoot) and sandblasted images led by Owen Oliver (Quinault/Isleta Pueblo) of Headwater People Consulting.
Your gift of support will do more than help complete the new Ocean Pavilion—it will also advance the Seattle Aquarium’s conservation mission. You’ll be furthering our work to restore species locally and across the ocean, influence policy that protects the marine environment and endangered marine animals, expand community access through our partnerships with over 500 nonprofit organizations, and more.
The Ocean Pavilion will open on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
